DOUGLAS) MacARTHUR - FIRST DAY COVER SIGNED CO-SIGNED BY: ARTHUR MacARTHUR IV - HFSID 157666 JEAN MacARTHUR and ARTHUR MacARTHUR The widow and son of General Douglas MacArthur sign a tribute to the war hero. Philatelic Envelope signed: " Jean MacArthur " and " Arthur MacArthur ", 6½x3½. First Day Cover honoring Douglas MacArthur, 6-cent MacArthur stamp affixed, postmarked Norfolk, VA, January 26, 1971, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. After marrying General Douglas MacArthur on April 30, 1937, JEAN FAIRCLOTH MacARTHUR returned to the Philippines with him. Their son, ARTHUR MacARTHUR , was born in Manila in 1938, three years before the Japanese attacked the Philippines, forcing the MacArthur family to the island fortress of Corregidor. During her husband's career, Mrs. MacArthur was heavily involved with social duties connected with her husband's position, often representing the General at official and social functions. After her husband's death in 1964, she continued her community and public service work and became honorary Chairman of the Board of Directors of the General Douglas MacArthur Foundation. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Reagan in 1988 for her steadfast loyalty to her husband and her country. Mrs. MacArthur, who died at the age of 101 on January 22, 2000, was buried next to her husband at the MacArthur Memorial on January 26, 2000, the 120th anniversary of his birth. ARTHUR MacARTHUR (b. 1938) is a concert pianist and writer, attending Columbia University to further pursue the arts. He currently lives under a false name to avoid comparisons to his father in his career, but still remains active in the Douglas MacArthur foundation. Fine condition.
